To Get Your Company to Recycle

1. Start collecting aluminum cans from your friends and co-workers.

2. Place cans on your desk, in any order, sculpture, or art deco arrangement you want.

3. Leave said cans on desk for several weeks.

4. Wait for co-workers to complain.

Your building facilities peeps will get the hint and find a way to provide recycling bins. Trust me on this one.

Another off-topic entry, but it’s worth it! Just to preface this, here’s some information about store searches and examinations from Lawyer Lad of qdnow.com fame. There are two relevant podcasts: Store Security and Your Rights and Store Security Part 2.

Who has the right to examine your receipt? Search your bags? Since this is a recurring topic in the Writer’s Cave, and since some of us have been unlawfully detained for failing to show their own receipts when leaving Costco, I thought I’d share this:

Can counting is finished, but here’s the last round of counts from July. I entered the numbers in a draft entry and never finished the post. Sorry about that, but life got busy.

We now have aluminum recycling bins at work, so my can counting days are over. It was a long, kind of silly run, but having a central recycling area is much better than collecting cans in my cube. I had been planning to go out with a bang after they brought in the recycling bins, and I had collected quite a few cans, but they were sacrificed to the recycling bins while I was on vacation.

Anyway, the numbers entered in this blog post are the last of the last. But I renewed kristarecycles.com for another year, so you may hear from me again. Especially since I’m still getting traffic from ya’ll even though I haven’t updated the blog in two months. Thanks for that. I’ve even made a couple of bucks off you. Woo hoo!

Check out this youtube video where protesters are repeatedly hosed down with water for protesting at a Pulte construction site. That treatment is completely unacceptable. Shame on the people who allowed this to happen.

Earth Day is on Sunday, so don’t forget to do something nice for the Earth this weekend. Here are a couple of suggestions:

Get a free CFL bulb from Home Depot and use it to replace a less energy efficient bulb. While you’re there, why not get enough bulbs to replace every light in your house?

Don’t let water run down the drain while you wait for it to heat up. Put a bucket under that faucet and use it to water a plant (that’s double karma points for you!).

Need I say… recycle!

Refill that water bottle instead of putting it in the trash.

Avoid buying products that have excessive packaging. How much energy does it take to seal those CFL bulbs in that plastic packaging anyway?

Do something from one of Treehugger’s Green Guides. Like what? Go rechargeable on your batteries, use your travel mug instead of a disposable cup and go Fair Trade on your tea and coffee (don’t forget you can request a Fair Trade beverage at your local Starbucks - and pick up used coffee grounds to use on your garden at the same time), or FreeCycle your stuff. There are lots of things one person can do!

In the Other column, we have:

Coke Zero - 4
Canada Dry Ginger Ale - 1
Safeway Diet Orange - 2
Safeway Diet Grapefruit - 3
Diet Parker’s Cream Soda - 1
