This is only tangentially related… But wouldn’t it be the coolest if Gore announced his presidential candidacy at the oscars? There isn’t a lot of substance to the idea, but people are buzzing about it. It even got a mention on CNN.

I love tracking the stats for my Web site.
When I ran for office, the high point was seeing that someone from the U.S. Senate browsed through my site. What would the equivalent be for a site that tracks recycling pop cans? Maybe seeing that someone from Pepsi has been browsing the site? Well, someone from Pepsi has been! Since Pepsi is the only type of soda I usually drink (albeit, not very often), I found that to be very exciting. Very sorry about the poor showing for Pepsi, though.

Back in the 80s and early 90s, channels 5 and 15 were really like channel 45 (the WB, right?). Channel 5 was the home of Wallace and Ladmo, and Channel 15 had the cool cartoons on after school. One of those channels, I think it was Channel 15, ran a recycling commercial during cartoons. It ran something like this: Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run your TV for three hours.
I’ve always remembered that commercial and often wondered if it was true. So, I looked it up. Check out the “Did You Know” section on thinkcans.com.

Starbucks gives a slight incentive for bringing in reusable mugs for your daily cuppa. I found out all about this today (even though I’ve taken my Shakespeare mug in for at least a month now), when I bought a lovely new mug and got 10 cents off my Gingerbread Latte (that was 10 cents, not .10 cents for any of you who’ve followed the controversy over the passed proposition to add an .80 cent sales tax to cigarettes for early childhood education).
Apparently, this discount is well-known in some circles. Less than an hour after making this exciting discovery, I perused my Treehugger feeds and found this “Bring Your Own” blog that tells you all about the stores that offer discounts for bringing your own. It’s not much, but that 10 cents adds up to a whopping $10.40/year in savings for an average person who buys coffee twice a week. That’s good for three extra Gingerbread Lattes every year. Plus, you have the satisfaction of knowing you’ve made a difference.
This is lifted from the Bring Your Own site:
Peets, Starbucks, Wild Oats, Whole Foods, and many others will throw you a dime for doing the right thing.
In case you were wondering about the new mug, here you go:
