Who has the right to examine your receipt?

Another off-topic entry, but it’s worth it! Just to preface this, here’s some information about store searches and examinations from Lawyer Lad of qdnow.com fame. There are two relevant podcasts: Store Security and Your Rights and Store Security Part 2.

Who has the right to examine your receipt? Search your bags? Since this is a recurring topic in the Writer’s Cave, and since some of us have been unlawfully detained for failing to show their own receipts when leaving Costco, I thought I’d share this:

Papers Please: Arrested at Circuit City

Guess whose side I’m on.

Last count from July

Can counting is finished, but here’s the last round of counts from July. I entered the numbers in a draft entry and never finished the post. Sorry about that, but life got busy.

We now have aluminum recycling bins at work, so my can counting days are over. It was a long, kind of silly run, but having a central recycling area is much better than collecting cans in my cube. I had been planning to go out with a bang after they brought in the recycling bins, and I had collected quite a few cans, but they were sacrificed to the recycling bins while I was on vacation.

Anyway, the numbers entered in this blog post are the last of the last. But I renewed kristarecycles.com for another year, so you may hear from me again. Especially since I’m still getting traffic from ya’ll even though I haven’t updated the blog in two months. Thanks for that. I’ve even made a couple of bucks off you. Woo hoo!

Shame on Pulte

Just a minor deviation from recycling…

Check out this youtube video where protesters are repeatedly hosed down with water for protesting at a Pulte construction site. That treatment is completely unacceptable. Shame on the people who allowed this to happen.

Read more about what happened, why the workers are protesting, and what the workers want from Pulte.

Rainbow Coke and Can Shingles

Coke has a new version of Diet Coke that I’m calling Rainbow Coke (because of the logo). The real name is Diet Coke Plus (with added vitamins and minerals). It still isn’t something I’d be tempted to try.

I am an avid follower of treehugger.com just because of gems like these can shingles. If you have an HOA, you probably shouldn’t use them.

In the Other column:

Pure Protein Shake: 2
Caffeine Free Diet Coke: 1
Diet Pepsi Jazz: 5
Enviga Nestea: 1

It’s my blog; I can do what I want to.

It’s been a long time since my last update, so I’ve taken administrator liberties with this post by fudging the posted date. I emailed these can counts to myself on May 10th at 6:33pm, and that’s what I’m sticking with. Go liberties!

In the Other category:

Coke Zero: 9
Super Rooster Booster: 1
Rock Star: 1
Safeway Diet Grapefruit: 3
Diet Parker’s Cream Soda: 2
Dr. Brown’s Cream Soda: 1

Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day is on Sunday, so don’t forget to do something nice for the Earth this weekend. Here are a couple of suggestions:

  • Get a free CFL bulb from Home Depot and use it to replace a less energy efficient bulb. While you’re there, why not get enough bulbs to replace every light in your house?
  • Don’t let water run down the drain while you wait for it to heat up. Put a bucket under that faucet and use it to water a plant (that’s double karma points for you!).
  • Need I say… recycle!
  • Refill that water bottle instead of putting it in the trash.
  • Avoid buying products that have excessive packaging. How much energy does it take to seal those CFL bulbs in that plastic packaging anyway?
  • Do something from one of Treehugger’s Green Guides. Like what? Go rechargeable on your batteries, use your travel mug instead of a disposable cup and go Fair Trade on your tea and coffee (don’t forget you can request a Fair Trade beverage at your local Starbucks - and pick up used coffee grounds to use on your garden at the same time), or FreeCycle your stuff. There are lots of things one person can do!

In the Other column, we have:

Coke Zero - 4
Canada Dry Ginger Ale - 1
Safeway Diet Orange - 2
Safeway Diet Grapefruit - 3
Diet Parker’s Cream Soda - 1

Total count: 88

All hail the new king

After Mountain Dew’s valiant race to save the kingdom, the King of the Mountain has abdicated, leaving the throne open to the peppy and euphoric Diet Pepsi.

In the Other column:

Safeway Diet Orange - 1
Canada Dry Ginger Ale - 2
Diet Barq’s root beer - 1
Fresca - 1
Diet Parker’s Cream Soda - 1
Nestea - 1

Other mentionable items - this post pushes Krista Recycles over the 1000th recycled can mark. Very cool! That’s 3000 + hours of running my TV.

Coup averted

In a valiant effort, Diet Pepsi attempted a coup this week - while the leader of the Mountain Dew coalition was on vacation. Upon learning of the rebel’s attempt to gain the throne, the Mountain Dew leader exclaimed, “I am still King of the Mountain!”, referring to the childhood game of the same name. He is stalwart in his conviction of Divine Right and supreme ruler of all.

In the “Other” category, we have:

Coke Zero - 2
Fresca - 3
